Learn the difference between Spanish of Spain and Spanish of Latin America. The only major difference comes from personal pronouns and related verb conjugations -- with vosotros (you all) being predominantly used in Spain, and ustedes more common in Latin America.
Difference between greetings in Spain and Latin America. While common practice in Spain is to shake hands when you greet someone, the Latin American way is a lot more personal: you kiss cheeks. In all Spanish speaking Latin American countries, it is common practice for men to kiss women and women to kiss women on the (usually right) cheek as a greeting.
Difference between addressing people in Spain and Latin America. The use of the third-person plural pronoun is another difference between European Spanish and Latin American Spanish. In Spain the word commonly used is vosotros and in Latin America you will often hear ustedes. Vosotros is never used in Latin America. Spaniards recognize ustedes but it's considered extremely formal.
Especially when traveling to Latin America, don’t assume everyone (or anyone) will speak English, don’t stick to big cities, don’t drink the tap water unless it’s absolutely, definitely safe, don’t pack for hot weather only.
Do not get involved in discussions about regionalism. Do not call a Catalan Spanish. Don’t expect to see a bullfight in Barcelona or the Canary Islands. Don’t wear the wrong things.
Don’t assume people will speak English. Don’t be offended if a young local, unprovoked, dumps a bucket of water all over you. Don’t drink the water unless you are several thousand per cent positive it’s safe. Don’t take photos of locals without permission.
