When my company opened an office in Tokyo, I realised I required business Japanese. Kazumi’s Japanese for Work was just what I wanted. We learnt how to write business emails, what to say on the phone when someone answers or is unavailable on a call, and what type of phrases we could use during meetings, and I also learnt how you can use language in order to move around in a hierarchy that was extremely foreign to me. I have been obsessed with Japanese history and literature for years, and I finally decided to sign up for the master’s in Japanese course with Kazumi not too long ago. I was blown away by the depth of the programme – linguistics, phonology, classical texts, work with translations and modern cultural studies. Our teachers taught us to argue, discuss and interpret instead of rote learning facts. For homework, I even translated my first short story into Japanese. I’m a linguistics researcher, and so I wanted something that would be structured and academically strong in Japanese. Master’s course of Kazumi was better than what I had imagined. We were given the anthropological key to Japanese society, high-level grammar classes, structural semantics, the theory of translation, and literature. It was special because of the faculty members; everyone was extremely knowledgeable. They promoted independent research and writing and presentation building. In the end, I had finished a thesis on language influence in Japanese media — something I never thought I would have been able to attempt. This class opened up new possibilities in my higher education and added to my confidence as a scholar.

I had to qualify for the JFT exam for a hospitality job in Japan, but self-study was too tough. At the Kazumi School, it organised everything with its JFT Exam Preparation Course. My trainer knew what the examiners looked for and guided me accordingly. We did practice tests, speaking drills, and vocabulary lists specific to the exam. It was so close to the feedback that I started improving my weaknesses within weeks! I passed JFT; I didn’t believe it was actually possible. I enrolled my son in the Japanese Language Course at Kazumi School, and it proved to be one of the best decisions I made. As someone who could not speak a single word of Japanese, I was extremely nervous starting my lessons; however, Kazumi School has been great right from the beginning. The Japanese for Beginners course was beautifully crafted—from the very basics like Hiragana and Katakana to grammar and basic conversation.
