I came to the French Summer School Program so that my summer wouldn’t be a waste of time. It was the best decision I made all year. Highly immersive 6 weeks of non-stop energy with plenty of cultural workshops, cooking classes and speaking labs. It was like living in a small France. I loved having such an enthusiastic teacher. I made friends, gained confidence and learnt more in six weeks than I had all year of teaching myself. Now I dream of going to Lyon to practise more.

I enrolled in the French Slang Course because I felt a need to sound less formal while messaging my French colleagues. It ended up being the most fun class I’ve ever taken. This French Symbols Course is a bit of an indulgence for me because I am interested in this topic—I’ve always been curious about the importance of the Eiffel Tower, the rooster and the fleur-de-lis. The class was surprisingly fascinating. Our instructor, Camille, covered historical context, political symbolism and cultural heritage that went with each French emblem. I studied how symbols created a national identity and how they operate in literature and film. It showed me France in a completely different light. Now whenever I see French art or architecture, I know the story behind it.
